Do I need a visa for SOUTH SUDAN?

South Sudan, the world’s newest nation (independent since July 2011), has one of the most restrictive visa policies in the world. Only four countries have full visa-free access. Most other nationalities require a visa to enter. However, eVisa is now available to all nationalities, and certain travel documents and passport categories receive visa on arrival. Holders of diplomatic, official, service, and special passports from any country may also obtain a visa on arrival.

2. Visa-Free Countries (Indefinite Stay)

Only four countries have unrestricted, indefinite visa-free access to South Sudan:

Visa-Free Countries — Indefinite Stay • Egypt • Kenya • Tanzania • Uganda

3. Visa on Arrival

The following categories may obtain a visa on arrival at South Sudan’s ports of entry (primarily Juba International Airport):

Visa on Arrival — Eligible Categories • Burundi nationals • Rwanda nationals • Holders of a United Nations ID card with Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) clearance • Diplomatic passport holders from any country • Official passport holders from any country • Service passport holders from any country • Special passport holders from any country

4. eVisa (Electronic Visa)

South Sudan offers an eVisa to all nationalities. The eVisa must be applied for before travel through the official South Sudan e-immigration portal. Both single-entry and multiple-entry options are available.

eVisa Key Details • Available to: All nationalities worldwide • Types: Single entry and multiple entry • Application: Online through the South Sudan e-immigration portal • Must be obtained before travel • Visa purpose categories include: tourism, business, official, and transit

5. Regular Visa (Embassy/Consulate)

Nationalities not eligible for visa on arrival and who prefer not to use eVisa can apply at South Sudanese embassies or consulates abroad. South Sudan has a limited diplomatic network, so eVisa is generally the most accessible option for most travelers.

6. General Entry Requirements

All travelers to South Sudan must satisfy:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining
  • Valid visa, eVisa, or visa on arrival authorization
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (required if arriving from endemic country)
  • Accommodation details or host’s letter of invitation

7. Health Requirements

Yellow fever vaccination is required for all travelers aged 9 months and over arriving from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Malaria is endemic throughout South Sudan; anti-malarial prophylaxis is strongly recommended.

8. Security and Travel Advisory

IMPORTANT: Security Advisory • South Sudan has ongoing internal conflict, food insecurity, and humanitarian crises • Many governments advise against all or non-essential travel to South Sudan • Inter-communal violence and banditry are present in many regions • Infrastructure (roads, hospitals, communications) is extremely limited • Travel outside Juba requires careful planning and security arrangements • Always register with your embassy upon arrival and monitor travel advisories
