Do I need a visa for NAURU?
The Republic of Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation and the world’s smallest republic, located in Micronesia in the central Pacific Ocean. Nauru maintains one of the most restrictive visa policies in the Pacific region. Almost all visitors require a visa, and entry is tightly controlled by the Nauru Department of Immigration. Nauru’s remoteness and limited aviation links mean visitor numbers are extremely low. Most visa applications are submitted by email. A valid passport is required with at least 3 months of validity beyond the intended stay.
2. Visa-Free Entry — Ordinary Passports
Very few nationalities enjoy visa-free access to Nauru. Currently, only three countries hold unconditional visa-free status for ordinary passport holders:
| Visa-Free Entry (Ordinary Passport) — 90 Days • Russia — 90 days visa-free • Spain — 90 days visa-free • United Arab Emirates — 90 days visa-free |
3. Diplomatic/Official Passport Arrangements
Japan’s diplomatic and official passport holders enjoy visa-free access to Nauru. Other countries may have similar arrangements at the diplomatic level.
| Diplomatic/Official Passport Visa-Free • Japan — Diplomatic and Official passport holders |
4. Free Visa on Arrival — Pacific Nations (90 Days)
Citizens of Pacific Island Forum member states and associated territories enjoy free visa on arrival for up to 90 days. This arrangement reflects Nauru’s regional ties within the Pacific Islands community.
| Free Visa on Arrival — Pacific Nations • Cook Islands • Fiji • Israel • Kiribati • Marshall Islands • Micronesia (Federated States) • Niue • Palau • Papua New Guinea • Samoa • Solomon Islands • Taiwan • Thailand • Tonga • Tuvalu • Vanuatu |
5. Simplified Visa — No Criminal Record/Medical Certificate Required
Citizens of all European Union member states and approximately 40 other countries are eligible for a simplified visa process. Unlike the standard visa, this category does not require a criminal record certificate or medical certificate, making the application process significantly less burdensome.
| Simplified Visa Countries (EU + ~40 Others) • All European Union member states • Andorra, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan • Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway • San Marino, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland • United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City • + approximately 25 additional countries |
6. Standard Visa Requirements
Most nationalities not covered by the above categories must submit a standard visa application to the Nauru Department of Immigration. Applications are typically submitted by email. The standard visa application requires additional documentation compared to the simplified process.
| Standard Visa Application Requirements • Valid passport (minimum 3 months validity beyond intended stay) • Completed visa application form • Passport photographs • Criminal record certificate (police clearance) • Medical certificate from a licensed physician • Confirmed return or onward ticket • Proof of accommodation or sponsorship letter from a Nauruan resident • Evidence of sufficient funds • Business visitors: letter of invitation from a Nauruan sponsor |
7. Journalist Visa
Nauru applies a particularly restrictive policy towards journalists. A journalist visa costs AUD 8,000 for a 3-month period. This high fee has been criticised internationally as a barrier to press freedom and has limited independent reporting on Nauru’s offshore immigration detention operations.
| Journalist Visa Details • Fee: AUD 8,000 for 3 months • Application required in advance • Subject to government approval • Highly restrictive — independent journalism severely limited |
8. Transit Policy
Passengers transiting through Nauru do not require a transit visa if their connecting flight departs within 3 hours and they remain in the international transit zone without clearing immigration. Longer transits or those requiring immigration clearance necessitate a standard or transit visa.
9. Pending Agreements
| Country | Agreement Type | Signed/Status |
| India | Diplomatic/Official visa-free | September 2024 (pending) |
| South Ossetia | 90 days within 180 (ordinary) | February 2018 (pending ratification) |
10. Important Notes
Nauru is served by only one airline, Nauru Airlines, which operates limited routes primarily to Australia and Pacific island destinations. The island hosts the Nauru Regional Processing Centre, an Australian offshore immigration detention facility, which is a significant aspect of the island’s economy and governance. Visitors should be aware that the island has limited tourist infrastructure and that the government strictly controls access by outsiders, particularly journalists and NGO workers.
