Do I Need a Visa for Belize?
Belize, the only English-speaking country in Central America, welcomes visitors from around the world. Whether or not you need a visa depends on your nationality, the type of passport you hold, and in some cases your existing travel documents. This guide breaks down Belize’s entry requirements for every category of traveler.
All visitors to Belize — regardless of nationality or visa status — must meet the following baseline requirements upon arrival:
- Hold sufficient funds of at least USD 75 per day for the duration of their stay
- Carry documents required for their next destination (onward travel proof)
1. Freedom of Movement — Indefinite Stay
As of 1 October 2025, a special freedom of movement arrangement exists among four Caribbean/Central American nations. Citizens of the following countries may stay in Belize indefinitely without a visa:
- Belize (own citizens)
- Barbados
- Dominica (Commonwealth of Dominica)
- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
This arrangement — launched in late 2025 — grants citizens of these four CARICOM nations the right of indefinite stay in each other’s territories, representing a significant step toward regional integration.
2. Visa Not Required — Ordinary Passport Holders
Citizens of a large number of countries may enter Belize without a visa using an ordinary passport or a refugee travel document. The default stay is indefinite unless otherwise specified. However, several countries are subject to capped durations as noted below.

4. Visa AND Clearance Required
Citizens of the following countries face the most restrictive entry requirements. In addition to obtaining a visa, they must also obtain a clearance before traveling to Belize:
- Afghanistan
- Algeria
- Bangladesh
- Eritrea
- Iran
- Iraq
- Kenya
- Libya
- North Korea
- Pakistan
- Palestine
- Somalia
- Sudan
- Syria
The clearance requirement is an additional security screening process that must be completed on top of the standard visa application. Travelers from these countries should contact the nearest Belizean embassy or consulate well in advance of their intended travel dates to allow sufficient processing time.
5. Repatriation Fee Upon Arrival
Citizens of certain countries are required to pay a repatriation deposit upon arrival in Belize, in addition to any applicable visa and clearance requirements. This fee is intended to cover potential repatriation costs:
| Country | Repatriation Fee |
| Bangladesh | 1,200 BZD (approx. USD 600) |
| China | 3,000 BZD (approx. USD 1,500) |
| India | 1,200 BZD (approx. USD 600) |
| Pakistan | 1,200 BZD (approx. USD 600) |
| Sri Lanka | 1,200 BZD (approx. USD 600) |
6. Visa Alternatives — Entry Without a Belizean Visa
Even if a traveler would ordinarily require a Belizean visa, they may be exempt from that requirement for stays of up to 30 days if they hold any of the following valid documents:
- A valid multiple-entry visa issued by the United States
- A valid multiple-entry visa issued by Canada
- A valid Permanent Residence Card of the United States or Canada
- A valid multiple-entry Schengen visa
This provision is particularly useful for citizens of countries that would normally require a Belizean visa, as it allows them to visit Belize short-term on the strength of their US, Canadian, or Schengen travel authorization. The stay must not exceed 30 days.
