Do I Need a Visa for Armenia?

Armenia — the ancient land of Mount Ararat, medieval monasteries, and the world’s oldest winery — has become an increasingly popular destination for travellers seeking history, culture, adventure, and warm hospitality. Nestled in the South Caucasus, Armenia borders Georgia, Azerbaijan, Iran, and Turkey, and sits at a fascinating crossroads of civilisations.

Armenia operates one of the most accessible visa systems in the region. Citizens of over 60 countries enjoy visa-free access for up to 180 days per year, and most other nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival or an e-Visa online — often without needing to visit an embassy at all. A relatively small number of countries require an advance visa, and entry is refused only to holders of certain unrecognised travel documents.

This guide covers every category of traveller — from fully visa-free nationalities and their specific document rights, to visa on arrival, conditional visa on arrival, the e-Visa system, advance visa requirements, and entry refusals.

Key Regional Frameworks Armenia’s visa policy is shaped by two major regional agreements in addition to bilateral deals: (1) The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) mobility rights framework, which covers post-Soviet states. (2) The Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) single market rules, covering Armenia, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Citizens of CIS and EEU member states, as well as all EU member states, enjoy visa-free access to Armenia.

Part 1: Visa-Free Entry — 180 Days per Calendar Year

Citizens of the following countries and territories may enter Armenia without any visa and stay for up to 180 days within any one calendar year. This is an exceptionally generous allowance — more than many countries in the world offer — and makes Armenia very attractive for long-stay visitors, digital nomads, and those exploring the region at leisure.

European Union — All 27 Member States

All EU citizens may enter Armenia visa-free for up to 180 days per year. This reflects Armenia’s close partnership aspirations with Europe and its Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with the EU. The 27 EU member states are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.

European Free Trade Association — All Member States

Citizens of all EFTA member states are equally entitled to 180-day visa-free access. EFTA members are: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Individual Countries — 180 Days

The following countries also enjoy 180-day visa-free access to Armenia on ordinary passports:

Special Document Rules for Georgia and Russia

  • Georgia (ID card): Georgian citizens may use their national ID card in lieu of a passport, but ONLY when arriving directly from Georgia (i.e. via the land border crossing). If travelling from a third country, a full passport is required.
  • Russia (internal passport): Russian citizens may use their internal (domestic) passport — the passport used within Russia — in lieu of an international passport, but ONLY when arriving by air. For land border crossings from other countries, the international passport is required.

Part 2: Visa-Free Entry — 90 Days within any 180-Day Period

Three countries enjoy a more limited visa-free stay of 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. This is still generous, but shorter than the 180-day annual allowance above, and calculated on a rolling rather than calendar-year basis.

Important: Azerbaijan — Special Entry Permit Required Although Azerbaijani citizens are technically visa-free for Armenia, they are required to obtain a special entry permit before travelling. This is a significant additional requirement. Given the historically difficult relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan (including the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict), travellers should check the very latest official guidance from both the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mfa.am) and their own government’s travel advisory before planning any travel between these two countries.

Part 3: Diplomatic, Official and Service Passport Holders

In addition to the ordinary passport visa-free arrangements, Armenia has specific exemptions for holders of non-ordinary passports from additional countries:

Part 4: Visa on Arrival — 120 Days, 15,000 AMD

Citizens of the following countries may obtain a tourist visa on arrival at Armenian border crossings (including Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan) for a maximum stay of 120 days. The cost is 15,000 Armenian Dram (AMD). These travellers can also apply for an e-Visa online in advance as an alternative to the visa on arrival.

Part 5: Conditional Visa on Arrival — ASEAN Countries (Excluding Singapore and Thailand)

Citizens of ASEAN member states (except Singapore, which is fully visa-free, and Thailand, which has standard VOA access) may apply for a visa on arrival, but only if they meet an additional condition: they must hold a valid visa or valid permanent resident permit (resident card) issued by one of the following countries or blocs:

  • Australia
  • Belarus
  • Canada
  • Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • Russia
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • European Union / Schengen Area member states
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

If you meet this condition, you may apply for a visa on arrival. If you do not hold a valid visa or resident permit from one of these countries, you must apply for an e-Visa in advance instead.

The ASEAN member states covered by this conditional provision are: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.

Tip for ASEAN Travellers If you hold a US visa, UK visa, Schengen visa, or residence permit from any of the qualifying countries, bring it with you — this is your key to obtaining a visa on arrival in Armenia. Without it, you should apply for an Armenian e-Visa at least 3 business days before departure via evisa.mfa.am.

Additionally, the following countries also fall under the conditional visa-on-arrival category — citizens must hold a qualifying visa or resident permit from one of the countries listed above, or alternatively apply for an e-Visa:

Part 6: The Armenian e-Visa

Armenia offers a convenient electronic visa (e-Visa) system available to virtually all nationalities that are not subject to the most restrictive visa category (advance embassy visa only). The e-Visa is available online through the official Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at evisa.mfa.am.

Processing timeMinimum 3 business days before travel — apply early
Where to applyevisa.mfa.am (official Armenian MFA portal)
Who is eligibleAll nationalities except those required to apply at an embassy (see Part 7)

The e-Visa is a flexible and accessible option for travellers whose nationality falls into the conditional VOA category or who simply prefer to arrange their visa in advance rather than at the border.

Part 7: Advance Embassy Visa Required — With Invitation

Citizens of the following countries and territories face the most restrictive entry category. They must apply for a physical visa at an Armenian embassy or consulate before travelling, and they can only do so if they hold a formal invitation from an Armenian individual or organisation. The e-Visa and visa on arrival systems are not available to these nationalities.

African Union Member States (Most)

Citizens of nearly all African Union member states require an advance invitation-based embassy visa. The following African countries are EXCEPTIONS (their citizens have easier access as noted elsewhere in this guide):

  • Algeria — conditional VOA or e-Visa
  • Egypt — conditional VOA or e-Visa (diplomatic passport exempt)
  • Morocco — conditional VOA or e-Visa
  • South Africa — standard visa on arrival
  • Tunisia — conditional VOA or e-Visa (pending ratification of new agreement)

All other African Union member states require an advance visa with invitation.

Part 8: Entry Refused — Unrecognised Travel Documents

Armenia does not recognise passports issued by the following entities and refuses entry and transit to holders of these documents. Importantly, the refusal applies even if the holder does not leave the aircraft and is only transiting through Armenian territory on the same flight:

EntityReason for Non-Recognition
AbkhaziaBreakaway region of Georgia — not recognised as a state by Armenia
KosovoNot recognised as a state by Armenia
Sahara (Western Sahara)Not recognised as a state by Armenia
SomalilandBreakaway region of Somalia — not recognised as a state by Armenia
South OssetiaBreakaway region of Georgia — not recognised as a state by Armenia
TransnistriaBreakaway region of Moldova — not recognised as a state by Armenia
Transit Note The entry refusal for holders of unrecognised travel documents is absolute — it applies even to airside transit passengers who do not intend to leave the aircraft. Anyone holding one of these documents should not attempt to transit through Armenian airports.
