Do I Need a Visa for Algeria?

Algeria, officially the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a vast North African nation with rich culture, diverse landscapes, and historical significance. Whether you’re planning a business trip, tourism adventure, or family reunion, understanding Algeria’s visa requirements before you travel is essential.

This guide covers everything you need to know about Algeria’s visa policy, broken down by nationality, passport type, and purpose of travel.

1. General Entry Requirements

All visitors to Algeria must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry, regardless of their nationality or visa status. This is a firm requirement and applies to both visa-exempt and visa-required travellers.

In most cases, visas must be obtained in advance from an Algerian diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate) in your country of residence. However, there are limited exceptions for cruise ship passengers and organised tour groups.

2. Visa-Free Countries (No Visa Required)

Citizens of a small number of countries can enter Algeria without a visa for up to 90 days. The following nationalities qualify, along with refugees and stateless persons residing in these countries:

  • Libya — 90 days
  • Malaysia — 90 days
  • Mali — 90 days
  • Mauritania — 90 days
  • Seychelles — 90 days
  • Tunisia — 90 days
  • Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic — 90 days
  • Hong Kong (SAR) — 14 days only (shorter stay permitted)

If you hold a passport from any of the above countries, or are a refugee/stateless person residing in one of those countries, you may enter Algeria without a visa. Note that Hong Kong SAR passport holders are only permitted a stay of 14 days, compared to the standard 90-day allowance.

⚠️  Note: Morocco was previously included in visa-free arrangements, however this agreement has since been suspended. Moroccan passport holders now require a visa to enter Algeria.

3. Diplomatic & Service Passport Holders

Algeria has established visa exemption agreements for holders of diplomatic and/or service (official) passports from a wide range of countries. These agreements allow eligible passport holders to enter Algeria without a visa for official purposes.

3.1 Diplomatic AND Service Passport Holders (Both Categories Exempt)

3.3 Pending / Unratified Agreements

Algeria has signed but not yet ratified visa exemption agreements for diplomatic and service passport holders from the following countries:

  • India — Diplomatic and Service (signed, pending ratification)
  • Indonesia — Diplomatic and Service (signed, pending ratification)

⚠️  Note: These agreements are not yet in force. Travellers from India and Indonesia holding diplomatic or service passports should verify the current status before travelling.

4. Visa on Arrival

4.1 Cruise Ship Passengers

Travellers arriving in Algeria aboard a cruise ship do not need to apply for a visa in advance. Instead, visas are processed on board the ship prior to disembarkation. This is a convenient option for those visiting Algeria as part of a Mediterranean cruise itinerary.

4.2 Organised Tour Groups (Southern Provinces)

Travellers participating in tours organised by an approved travel agency may obtain a visa on arrival for a stay of up to 30 days. To qualify, the tour itinerary must include at least one of Algeria’s designated southern provinces:

Adrar, Béchar, Béni Abbès, Biskra, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Djanet, Djelfa, El Bayadh, El M’Ghair, El Menia, El Oued, Ghardaïa, Illizi, In Guezzam, In Salah, Laghouat, M’Sila, Naâma, Ouargla, Ouled Djellal, Tamanrasset, Timimoun, Tindouf, and Touggourt.

📢  Update (December 2024): The Algerian government has proposed expanding the visa-on-arrival provision to cover all provinces — not just the southern ones listed above. This change was under consideration as of late 2024, so travellers should check for the latest updates before departing.

5. Visa Application Process (For All Others)

If you are not a citizen of a visa-exempt country and are not arriving by cruise ship or on an approved tour, you must apply for a visa before travelling to Algeria. Applications are submitted at an Algerian embassy or consulate in your country of residence.

5.1 Required Documents (Minimum for All Applicants)

The following documents are required at minimum by all visa applicants:

  • Two completed copies of the visa application form
  • Four passport-sized photographs (two per form)
  • Two photocopies of every page in your passport
  • Your original passport
  • A written justification for your visit to Algeria
  • Payment of the applicable visa fee (varies by visa type and applicant’s nationality)

5.2 Visa Categories Available

Algeria currently issues visas for the following purposes:

  • Tourism
  • Business visits
  • Work
  • Study
  • Diplomacy
  • Journalism
  • Family reunification
  • Cultural events
  • Medical travel
  • Transit

The specific documents required differ by visa category. In most cases, an invitation from an individual or organisation in Algeria is required. Tourist visa applicants must provide proof of hotel bookings; transit visa applicants must show proof of onward travel.

5.3 Travel Insurance Requirement

Citizens of the following countries are required to obtain travel insurance when applying for an Algerian visa. The insurance policy determines the start date of the visa’s validity:

  • All European Union member states (except Croatia, Cyprus, and Ireland)
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Iceland
  • New Zealand
  • North Macedonia
  • Norway
  • Switzerland

ℹ️  If you hold a passport from any of these countries, ensure your travel insurance is in place before submitting your visa application, as this will affect your visa issue date.

6. Special Entry Restrictions

6.1 Syrian Nationals — Financial Requirements

Citizens of Syria are subject to additional financial requirements when seeking entry to Algeria. They must demonstrate they have sufficient funds to cover their stay:

  • With an Algerian sponsor: A minimum of €1,000 must be shown
  • Without an Algerian sponsor: A minimum of €4,000 must be shown

Syrian nationals must provide evidence of these funds as part of their visa or entry documentation.

6.2 Israeli Nationals — Entry and Transit Refused

Algeria does not permit the entry or transit of Israeli citizens. This ban is comprehensive: Israeli passport holders are refused entry even if they do not leave the aircraft and are merely transiting through an Algerian airport on the same flight. Travellers with Israeli passports or stamps should be aware of this restriction.
