Visa Requirements for Australian Citizens 2026

Australian citizens hold one of the world’s most powerful passports. As of 2026, the Australian passport grants visa-free or visa on arrival access to 182 countries and territories worldwide, ranking it 7th globally according to the Henley Passport Index.

This article provides a comprehensive breakdown of visa requirements for Australian passport holders across all major countries and territories. Entries are organised by region for ease of reference. The categories of entry requirements include:

Visa Not Required — Australian citizens may enter without any prior visa arrangement.

Visa on Arrival — A visa is granted upon arriving at the port of entry.

eVisa — A visa must be obtained electronically before travel.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA/eTA) — Pre-travel online authorisation required.

Visa Required — A visa must be obtained in advance through the destination country’s embassy or consulate.

Beyond visa requirements, most countries impose additional entry conditions such as proof of sufficient funds, return or onward tickets, hotel bookings, vaccination certificates, and minimum passport validity. These additional requirements are noted where relevant in the tables below.

Note: Travel advisories from the Australian Government are included where applicable. Australians are strongly encouraged to check the latest advisories on Smartraveller (www.smartraveller.gov.au) before travel, as conditions can change rapidly.

1. Africa

Australia’s passport holders enjoy broadly favourable entry conditions across Africa, with many countries offering eVisa systems and a growing number granting visa-free access. Several African nations, particularly in West and Central Africa, require advance visas and vaccination certificates. The Australian Government maintains active travel advisories against visiting several African countries due to security concerns.

2. The Americas

Australian passport holders enjoy excellent access throughout North, Central, and South America. The vast majority of countries in this region require no visa, with many allowing stays of 90 days or more. The United States accepts Australians under the Visa Waiver Program, requiring only an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Canada requires an eTA for air arrivals. Brazil introduced an eVisa requirement for Australians in April 2025. Chile also recently removed its visa requirement in September 2025.

3. Asia

Asia presents a mixed picture for Australian travellers. Popular destinations like Japan, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines welcome Australians with no visa required. China granted visa-free access from July 2024 to December 2026. Several countries in South and Southeast Asia offer eVisa or visa-on-arrival options. Australians are strongly advised against travelling to Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Myanmar, North Korea, Syria, and Yemen due to significant safety and security concerns.

4. Europe

European countries offer some of the most generous entry conditions for Australians. Nearly all European nations — including the full Schengen Area — allow Australians to enter without a visa. Under the Schengen Agreement, Australians can remain in the Schengen Area as a whole for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Australia has also signed individual bilateral visa waiver agreements with Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, which in practice allow up to 3 months in each of those countries regardless of time spent in the rest of Schengen.

Russia remains an exception: a visa is required, and the Australian Government strongly advises against travel there due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and risk of arbitrary detention. Belarus similarly advises against travel, though a 30-day visa-free option exists for arrivals and departures through Minsk International Airport. The United Kingdom requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), which is valid for 2 years.

5. Oceania and the Pacific

Australia’s neighbours in the Pacific region generally provide Australians with the most favourable entry conditions globally. New Zealand, under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, allows Australian citizens to live and work indefinitely. Most Pacific island nations such as Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands require no visa, and many provide a free visa or permit on arrival.

Many dependent and autonomous territories follow the visa rules of their administering nation, often granting Australians the same access. Notable territories include Taiwan (90 days visa-free), Hong Kong (90 days), and Macau (30 days). Most UK, French, Dutch, and US overseas territories also grant Australians visa-free access.

7. Understanding the Schengen Area

The Schengen Area comprises 26 European countries that have abolished passport controls at their mutual borders. For Australian travellers, this means:

As an overall Schengen stay: Australians may remain in the Schengen Area as a whole for no more than 90 days in any 180-day period.

With bilateral agreements: For countries that have signed individual bilateral visa waiver agreements with Australia (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden), Australians may stay up to 3 months in each country without that time counting against the overall Schengen limit.

Working rights during visa-free stays: Australians may work without a work permit in Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, and Sweden during the visa exemption period.

Australians classified as ‘Annex II’ foreign nationals may remain across all 26 Schengen states for 3 months in every 6-month period. For longer stays, a national long-stay ‘D’ visa or residence permit is required. However, several Schengen states offer simplified processes for Australians — for example, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, and the Netherlands allow Australians to apply for residence permits after arrival rather than in advance.

Working Holiday provisions are also available for Australians aged 18-30 (or 18-35 in some cases) to obtain long-stay national visas and/or residence permits in select Schengen countries.

8. Special Provisions: United Kingdom

Australian citizens may visit the United Kingdom for up to 6 months (or 3 months if entering from Ireland) without a visa. However, an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is required in advance, which is valid for 2 years. During the visit, Australians must not work, register a marriage, or overstay.

Additional pathways for Australians in the UK include:

Right of Abode: Australians born before 1983 who qualify may live and work in the UK indefinitely.

UK Ancestry Visa: Australians with a grandparent born in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or pre-1922 Ireland can work in the UK for 5 years and then apply to settle indefinitely.

Youth Mobility Scheme: Australians aged 18-30 can live and work in the UK for up to 2 years. A 2021 announcement proposed expanding this to 18-35 year olds for up to 3 years.

9. Special Provisions: New Zealand

Under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, Australian citizens may reside or work in New Zealand indefinitely without a visa. On arrival, Australians may be granted a New Zealand Resident Visa entitling the holder to live, work, and study in New Zealand, provided they meet character requirements (no criminal convictions, no untreated tuberculosis, and no prior deportation from any country). Australian citizens may also use eGate on arrival and are not required to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy.

10. Non-Visa Entry Restrictions

Beyond visas, many countries impose additional entry requirements that Australians must be aware of:

Passport Validity

Many countries require Australians to have at least 6 months of passport validity remaining on arrival, including Cambodia, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the UAE. Countries like Japan, Ireland, and the United Kingdom only require that the passport be valid for the intended stay. Australians should always ensure their passport has sufficient remaining validity before travelling.

Vaccination Requirements

Many African countries require an International Certificate of Vaccination against Yellow Fever for all incoming passengers. These include Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, DRC, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia. Additional countries require Yellow Fever proof only if arriving from an endemic area or transiting through one.

Biometric Data Collection

Several countries collect fingerprints and/or photographs on arrival, including the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Saudi Arabia, China (from 2018, for those aged 14-70), and all Schengen Area countries (under the Entry/Exit System launched in October 2025). Refusal to comply may result in denied entry.

Israeli Stamps

Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, and Yemen do not allow entry to individuals whose passports contain Israeli stamps or evidence of prior travel to Israel. Since January 2013, Israel has largely ceased stamping foreign passports at Ben Gurion Airport. Iran also refuses entry to holders of passports with an Israeli visa or stamp less than 12 months old.

Criminal Record Restrictions

Countries including the United States, Canada, and New Zealand may deny entry to non-citizens with criminal records. Australians with any prior convictions are strongly advised to check entry requirements well in advance of travel.

11. APEC Business Travel Card

Australians who frequently travel to Asia-Pacific economies for business may be eligible for an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC). This card allows holders to enter the following economies without a separate visa: Brunei, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam (and Russia up to 90 days).

The card must be used alongside a valid Australian passport and provides expedited processing at border crossings in all APEC member economies. The United States and Canada are transitional members; ABTC holders still require separate authorisation (ESTA and eTA respectively) for these countries.

12. Consular Assistance and Emergency Support

Australia maintains over 100 diplomatic missions worldwide through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). In countries where Australia does not have a mission, Australians may seek consular assistance from Canadian missions under the Canada-Australia Consular Services Sharing Agreement.

Australians travelling abroad are encouraged to register their travel at Smartraveller (www.smartraveller.gov.au) to receive updates and emergency assistance if needed. DFAT’s 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre can be reached on +61 2 6261 3305 from overseas.

13. Australian Travel Bans

Under Australian law, it is a criminal offence for Australians to travel or remain in declared areas. The Australian Government may declare specific regions of foreign countries as off-limits — currently this includes certain areas that have been declared under counter-terrorism legislation. Australians who travel to declared areas without a valid reason (such as humanitarian work with an approved organisation) can face significant criminal penalties.

Conclusion

The Australian passport is one of the most valuable travel documents in the world, offering its holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to the vast majority of the globe. As of 2026, Australians can travel to 182 countries and territories with minimal visa bureaucracy, making international travel highly accessible.

However, travellers must remain aware that entry requirements can change at short notice. Geopolitical events, public health developments, and bilateral negotiations continuously affect the visa landscape. The tables in this article reflect requirements as documented in early 2026. Australians are always advised to verify current entry conditions with the relevant embassy or consulate and via Smartraveller before travelling.

For regions such as the Middle East, parts of Africa, and certain countries in Eastern Europe and Asia, the Australian Government maintains active ‘Do Not Travel’ advisories. Regardless of whether a visa can technically be obtained, Australians should take these advisories seriously and carefully consider whether travel to such destinations is necessary.
