Do I need a visa for TAJIKISTAN?

Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Visitors must hold a valid passport and, depending on nationality, may enter visa-free, obtain a visa on arrival at Dushanbe Airport, or apply for an e-Visa. The e-Visa was launched in June 2016 and is available to all nationalities. Travelers planning to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) require an additional permit alongside their regular visa.

3. Non-Ordinary Passport Exemptions

Holders of diplomatic, official, service, or special passports from many countries are exempt from visa requirements or receive extended stays beyond the ordinary passport allowance. This applies to most neighboring and partner states under bilateral agreements.

4. Visa on Arrival

A visa on arrival is available at Dushanbe International Airport for eligible nationalities. Travelers from Morocco may receive a visa on arrival valid for up to 2 months; most other eligible nationalities receive a 45-day visa on arrival.

Visa on Arrival — Key Details • Available only at: Dushanbe International Airport • Morocco: visa on arrival valid for up to 2 months • Most other eligible nationalities: visa on arrival for 45 days • Fee payable in USD at the airport • Not available at land border crossings

5. Electronic Visa (e-Visa)

Tajikistan launched its e-Visa system in June 2016, making it available to all nationalities. The e-Visa allows travelers to apply online before travel and receive an electronic authorization to enter Tajikistan.

5.1 e-Visa Types and Fees

TypeFee (USD)Validity
Single Entry e-Visa$3060 days stay within 90-day validity
Multiple Entry e-Visa$5060 days stay within 90-day validity

6. Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) Permit

The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) — which includes the Pamir Mountains and the Wakhan Corridor — requires a special permit in addition to a regular Tajikistan visa or e-Visa. This region covers a large part of eastern Tajikistan and borders Afghanistan and China.

7. Special Travel Restriction — Iran

Iranian nationals traveling to Tajikistan must use a direct flight between Dushanbe and Tehran (or vice versa). Due to a bilateral restriction, Iranian travelers may not transit through third countries when traveling between Iran and Tajikistan. Tajikistan and Iran do not share a land border.

8. General Entry Requirements

All visitors must meet the following basic entry conditions:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining
  • Valid visa, e-Visa, or proof of visa-free entitlement
  • GBAO permit if planning to travel to Gorno-Badakhshan
  • Sufficient funds for the duration of stay
  • Return or onward travel ticket
  • Accommodation details (hotel booking or host’s contact information)

9. Registration Requirements

All foreign nationals staying in Tajikistan must register with the local OVIR (Department of Visas and Registration) within 3 days of arrival if staying in private accommodation. Hotels typically handle registration automatically. Failure to register may result in fines or complications at departure.

10. Important Notes

Important Reminders • Always carry the physical e-Visa printout or have it accessible on a device • GBAO permit must be obtained separately and shown at GBAO checkpoints • Currency exchange available in Dushanbe; USD widely accepted for fees • Overstaying the visa validity is a serious offense • Check current requirements with the Tajikistan embassy — policies may change
