Visa Requirements for Indian Citizens 2026

Visa requirements for Indian citizens are entry restrictions set by other countries that determine whether travellers from India need a visa before entering. As of 2026, Indian passport holders can travel to 56 countries and territories with either visa-free access or a visa on arrival, placing the Indian passport 75th globally on the Henley Passport Index. According to the Passport Index, Indian citizens currently have access to 25 visa-free destinations, 48 visa-on-arrival countries, 66 e-visa destinations, and 4 ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) locations, ranking the Indian passport 68th worldwide for travel freedom. Recent update: From 1 January 2026, Cape Verde suspended visa on arrival for Indian citizens. Travellers must now obtain a visa before travelling.

2. Africa

Africa presents a diverse visa landscape for Indian travellers. A growing number of African nations now offer eVisa systems or visa-on-arrival arrangements, while others maintain strict visa-required policies.

5. Europe

A single Schengen visa permits travel to all member states within the 90/180-day rule. Notably, as of February 2026, France launched a 6-month pilot program allowing Indian nationals to transit French airports without an Airport Transit Visa.

Key Schengen Note

A Schengen visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen member states. Additionally, holding a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa unlocks visa-free entry or eVisa eligibility in 20+ non-Schengen countries worldwide.

8. Non-Visa Restrictions

Beyond visa requirements, Indian travellers should be aware of the following additional entry conditions that apply at many international borders:

Passport Validity

Many countries require passports to be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of arrival. This includes Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Bhutan, Botswana, Brunei, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Egypt, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, UAE, Vietnam, and many more.

Countries requiring 3 months validity beyond intended departure include Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Honduras, Montenegro, Nauru, Moldova, New Zealand, and all EEA/Schengen countries.

Countries of the Schengen area also require non-EU passports to be less than 10 years old upon entry.

Yellow Fever Vaccination

The following African countries require all incoming passengers older than 9 months to 1 year to present a valid International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (Yellow Fever): Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, DR Congo, Republic of Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia. French Guiana in South America also requires this certificate.

Countries requiring vaccination only if arriving from/transiting through yellow fever-endemic areas include Algeria, Botswana, Cape Verde, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Lesotho, Libya, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Biometric Data Collection

Several countries collect fingerprints and/or facial scans from all foreign visitors, including India itself. Countries collecting biometrics include: Afghanistan, Argentina, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guinea, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, the entire Schengen Area (via the EES system launched October 2025), Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Uganda, UAE, and the United States.

Israeli Passport Stamps

Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, and Yemen do not allow entry to people whose passports contain Israeli stamps or evidence of travel to Israel. Iran refuses admission to holders of passports containing an Israeli visa or stamp less than 12 months old. To address this, Israel ceased stamping foreign passports at Ben Gurion Airport since January 2013.

Criminal Record

Countries including Australia, Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, and the United States routinely deny entry to non-citizens with a criminal record, depending on the type and severity of conviction.

9. Visa Exemptions Through Third-Country Visas

Indian citizens holding valid visas from certain major countries gain additional visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to other countries. This significantly expands travel options for Indian passport holders who already hold US, Canadian, UK, or Schengen visas.

GCC Residence Permit Benefits

Indian citizens holding a valid GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) residence permit may access visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to Egypt, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Oman, and Bahrain (GCC residents only for Bahrain). This greatly facilitates travel for the large Indian diaspora living and working in Gulf countries.

10. Special Zones & Sub-Regional Rules

Certain sub-regions and zones within countries have distinct entry requirements for Indian travellers:

  • Jeju Island (South Korea): Visa-free for 30 days for Indian citizens arriving directly at Jeju Island.
  • China — Hainan Province: Visa required, available at Haikou Meilan International Airport and Sanya Phoenix International Airport.
  • China — Tibet Autonomous Region: Tibet Travel Permit required (USD 10).
  • Belarus — Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park: Visa not required for 3 days with electronic pass.
  • Belarus — Brest and Grodno: Visa not required for 10 days.
  • Iran — Kish Island: Visa not required.
  • Malaysia — Sabah and Sarawak: These states have their own immigration authorities and passport is required to travel to them, though the same visa applies.
  • Vietnam — Phú Quốc: Visa not required for 30 days.
  • Pakistan — Kartarpur Corridor: No visa required, USD 20 permit required. Note: Corridor was closed from India’s side following the 2025 Pahalgam Attack.
  • Ecuador — Galápagos: Online pre-registration required. Transit Control Card must be obtained at airport before departure.
  • Colombia — San Andrés and Leticia: Tourist cards must be purchased on arrival.
  • Saudi Arabia — Mecca and Medina: Non-Muslims and those following the Ahmadiyya movement are strictly prohibited from entry.

11. Visa Reciprocity

The Indian Government has not drafted laws to mandate reciprocity in visa agreements. While a small number of bilateral agreements include reciprocity, many visa relationships remain asymmetric. India grants eVisas (typically 60 days) to citizens of many countries that offer only basic access to Indian passport holders.

Countries with Full Reciprocity

India has achieved full reciprocity in visa-free or eVisa privileges with: Bhutan (Freedom of Movement), Nepal (Freedom of Movement), Maldives (Visa not required, 90 days), and numerous eVisa partners including Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Benin, Botswana, Bolivia, Cambodia, Colombia, Djibouti, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Georgia, Guinea, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Lesotho, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Thailand, Togo, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zambia.

Countries with Partial Reciprocity

India has achieved partial reciprocity with countries where Indian immigration rules afford citizens of those countries slightly fewer privileges than what those countries provide for Indian citizens. This includes countries such as Angola, Barbados, Bolivia, Burundi, Cambodia, Dominica, El Salvador, Fiji, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kiribati, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Oman, Palau, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and Zimbabwe.

12. Key Travel Tips for Indian Passport Holders

  • Always check the most current visa requirements before travel, as policies change frequently.
  • Holders of valid US, UK, Canadian, or Schengen visas should investigate whether they can access additional countries through third-country visa exemptions — this can significantly expand travel options.
  • GCC (Gulf) residents enjoy particularly expanded travel benefits, including visa-on-arrival access to several countries not available to regular Indian passport holders.
  • Ensure your passport has sufficient blank pages (typically 1–2) before travelling, as many countries enforce this requirement.
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificates are mandatory for travel to/from many African countries. Ensure certificates are obtained well in advance.
  • Always carry sufficient funds and a confirmed return/onward ticket, as many countries require these for visa-on-arrival or visa-free entry.
  • Indian citizens with Pakistani passport stamps may face difficulties entering Israel, and vice versa. Exercise caution when planning itineraries through conflicting regions.
  • Since 2025, India issues ordinary e-passports, which may streamline processing at biometric-enabled borders.
